It’s the season of Mangoes!
From pickles, shakes, custard, desserts, ice-creams, pies, smoothes, juices to jams; all you can think of exquisite ways to indulge your taste buds in delectable mango delights. Also, known as the “King of Fruits” the rich and aromatic flavours make everyone from kids to elders to crave for this pulpy fruit.

History & Origin
Mangoes are originated from numerous species of tropical trees that belong to the flowering plant Mangifera. The word “Mango” is originated from the Malayalam word māṅṅa.

Types of Mangoes
Mango is known as “Aam” in Hindi and is the delicious summer fruit.

The different type of Mangoes are:

1. Safeda/Banganapalli

The season of this type of Mango is from April to June. The origin is from Andhra Pradesh with a skin color of lovely bright yellow hue, slightly sour taste and are fibreless.

2. Pairi

The Pairi Mango, comes in the market from May – June. It has a reddish tinge skin tone and are known to be pure honey in taste. However, while relishing it you might find one sour bite hidden in the delicious and mouth-watering taste. It is used in Gujarat to make aamras and should be consumed quickly after the purchase.

3. Neelam

You will find Neelam mangoes during the months of May – July. They are known for their lovely fragrance and the tastiest ones’ come by the month of June. They are tiny in comparison to other mangoes, have an orange skin and are a favourite in Hydearbad.

4. Alphonso/ Hapus

This one is known as the “King of Mangoes” and comes during the months of May to June. They are usually small spherical mangoes are native to Maharashtra, and is also grown in Gujarat, parts of Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh and is the tastiest among all.

5. Dussehri

They are the most loved ones’ among all the types and comes in the months of June to July. They are also known as “Chusne wala Aam” and is best enjoyed by tearing off the tip and sucking out the sweet pulp and juice. It is also one of the oldest mango variety in the country, it traces back to the roots of the Nawab of Lucknow’s garden in the 18th century.

6. Totapuri

These mangoes are famous around the months of June to July. They are easiest to identify because of their parrot like looking tip. The not-so sweet mango is great for salads, or can also be consumed with a tempering of salt and chillies.

7.Kesar

This is the variety known for its fragrance and comes in the months of June to early July. The color of this Mango is pulp resembling saffron, the spice it is named after. Grown in Ahemdabad, Gujarat, it has a greener skin.

8.Chausa

With the Chausa aam, the mango season can never come to an end and it comes in the market around July to August. They have an incredibly sweet pulp and bright yellow skin.

9. Langra

Though the name of this type is still a mystery, but it comes in mid-July to August. It is the most popular in West Bengal, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
